First of many trips to the British Museum on Monday! I’ve decided I’m just going to do one exhibit a visit and go back a bunch of times, so I can thoroughly go through everything. My first stop was the Africa exhibit. Why? Because it’s the only exhibit in the basement, which really is super screwed up due to, you know, imperialism and racism and post-colonialism and other -isms. Not cool England, not cool.
(Photo proof of the screwed-up-ness)
The exhibit was really interesting and the museum itself is very cool as well. The outside is classically attractive, but the main inside area really aesthetically cool and different.
Totem pole inside the museum (how cool is that?):
The Africa exhibit was mostly art, pottery, masks, costumes, etc.
There’s a project where people in certain areas of Africa can trade in their weapons for tools in an effort to build stronger and more peaceful communities. The weapons are then made into art. This piece is called “Tree of Life” and is made out of guns that have been traded. The full picture of the tree is photo of the day 20.1.14!
Doll House from Mauritania:
AK-47 rifle, which just made me sad and contemplative, but I guess that’s sort of the point:
Also the Queen was hanging out at a souvenir shop around the corner of the museum:
